Discovering Weight Training! A game changer in my quest to combat my obesity.

I've decided to call it what it is, I''m obese and suffer from chronic obesity.  My BMI today is 38.8 (chronic obesity) down from an all time high of approximately 44 (morbid obesity).  I don't know why I haven't taken this seriously over the past several years.

New focus:

Since August of this year I've started weight training.  I bought a bunch of varied dumb bells from 5 lbs. to 15 lbs.  I've got a small weight bench and kettle bells from 5 lbs. to 15 lbs.  What a game changer! I absolutley love lifting and can already feel the changes in my body.   The other day I was scratching my calf and felt these weird bulges.  I realized those bulges are muscle.  My arms feel great!  I've still got those flabby grandma arms but over time that will go away.

I am not as focused on cardio as the main method but am still incorporating that into my weekly routine.  This change in routine has made things so much easier.  I walk daily and focus on total steps for the day.  Focusing on getting at least 7000 steps minium.  I  walk/run on the treadmill three times a week for only about 10 minutes.  Walk 2 minuts at 2.5, 1 minute at 3.5 and then move up to 4mph, with a run for 10 - 15 seconds at 6mph for a total of 10 minutes.  It gets my heart rate up and I break out in a sweat.  I want to burn fat and the only way to do that is constant movement throughout the day.  I have always hated running, hated cardio workouts but always thought those were the only way to burn fat.  I'm so very happy to be able to combine weight training and cardio.  The weight workouts raise my heart rate higher than the treadmill.

I'm using weight watchers as my diet but focusing on plenty of protein and very little complex carbs.  Sometimes I barely hit 1200 calories and yet I'm not hungry.  I take 5000 mg of creatine and stay hydrated!

The scale isn't going to be as favorable as in the past because I know I'm building muscle beneath all of my fat but I am starting to see changes in the way my clothing fits.

So this is it.  I'm rebranding my journey.  It's not just to lose weight it's a quest to erase my chronic obesity.

November 11 @ 219.8 lbs. (38.8 BMI)

Another weight loss journey

I've got a goal or milestone to focus on for my weight loss journey and it has to be good.

I'm going to France in July of this year and really want to lose a decent amount of weight by then.  Can I focus on 20-30 lbs?  It's a work trip but it's still France, it will be hot and I want to be a little bit healthier for the trip.

I spoke to my doctor about GLP medications and while it's intriguing I've just heard so many negatives about it.  1.) you can't be on it forever and many gain back the weight they lost.  2.) It makes people look great in their body but their faces age considerably.

I've already had experience with weight loss medication, losing all my weight and gaining it back, so I know my limits on that one.

I'm already aging, just turned 62 this year, so I don't want to make myself look any older.

What can I do?  I am continuing to use weight watchers, I just need to get more exercise.  That will be my focus moving forward.  At least 20-30 minutes a day for the first few weeks.  Increasing with time since the better weather is on it's way.

I want this time around to focus on health, not how good I look in a pair of pants.  I can't spend the rest of my days worrying about looking a certain way, but I should spend the rest of my days living my best life.  I want to spend the rest of my days enjoying exercise and movement.  This is going to be my main focus.

Losing weight is 80% kitchen but when you're like me and barely move all day, thanks to a desk job my entire life, it's really key to finding ways to exercise.

So my next few months of entries will be updates on my exercise routines.  Getting at least 7000 steps per day.

A focus on Dopamine

I saw a random IG post about low motivation, struggling to focus, feeling tired and how that behavior is tied to low dopamine levels.  So I did a little of my own research because I've noticed that same type of behavior in myself.  Is it aging or is it low dopamine.

Other symptoms of low dopamine and how I fare,

  • Anxiety or moodiness – yep, but I think that’s just my normal personality.
  • Depression or hopelessness – not too often, quite rare
  • Forgetfulness – sometimes
  • Difficulty concentrating – often easily distracted
  • Sleep issues – yes
  • Lack of motivation – at times
  • Reduced sex drive - yes

Living in the Midwest, where sunlight is hard to find during this time of year, it makes sense that a lack of it would lower dopamine levels.  Even if the sun is shining on a winter day, if it's 10 degrees outside it's unlikely I'll be taking a walk.

My brief non-scientific research found that as we age, we also show a reduction in dopamine.

My brief non-scientific research also showed that low dopamine levels can lead to weight gain.

So let’s see what can raise dopamine levels.

·       Eating protein and food high in tyrosine, folate and magnesium.
·       Listening to music.
·       Meditation.
·       Sunlight!
·       Sleep

A big one - Regular Exercise!

As I begin my journey to lose weight this year, I have a feeling that if I focus on raising my dopamine levels, I’ll naturally start to lose weight.

My research on foods rich in dopamine came up with nothing except that some foods can help dopamine production.  And guess what's on the list?!  Chocolate!!!!  Ok, if I'm trying to lose weight I'll probably have to limit that, but it was an encouraging find.

Today the weather is 40 degrees and rainy, but the sun came out so I'm about to take in some Vitamin D.

Extra Extra Read All About It! Will anyone read this blog?

I read on the internet today that about 77% of internet users reported that they still read blogs on a regular basis.  I researched this because I thought that maybe a re-start in blogging might be fun.   So here we are.

So much has happened at Dutch Creek since my last post!  We've had a college graduation, both of my children have moved out and both got married within 9 months of each other.

We've had two weddings.  A new grandbaby and a dog.  I recently started a new job and have had two work related trips to France in the last 6 months.

I've got some reno plans for the house.  Nothing of grand scale but just some refreshing.

This blog will be my placeholder.  A short and sweet update of my day to day, week to week activities.  It will be a place to hold memories that we can look back on year after year.

I'm turning 62 this year and weight loss will be a big focus of my life and this blog.  I'm in need of losing a huge amount of weight.  Perhaps logging the process will help me stay on track.  I'm posting my starting picture from November 2024.

My goal is to stay active.  I'm finding that the heavier I've become the more I just want to sit around so walking is going to be my go to activity.  Lower calorie meals (not always low fat or fat free), just eating more natural.

And so with this quick post, we'll begin our revamped journey of the Dutch Creek blog.

Gratitude Catch UP 1/17 and 1/24 Post 3

Things were pretty busy around here over the past couple of weeks.  I was soaking up some sun in Florida last Friday so I'm playing catch up today.

Leads me to my first list of things to be grateful during the week of 1/13.

1.  I got to fly to Florida in the middle of a cold winter week in Chicago and attend our annual sales meeting.  A few of us ladies who work together decided to stay the weekend.
2. By staying the weekend I avoided a huge flight delay and cancellation of flights due to a heavy snow storm moving through the Chicago area.
3. I got a sunburn during the winter!

This week has been a quiet week.  Nothing as exciting as last week but quiet can be good too!

1. My mother's birthday was this week.  She has been gone almost 16 years.  She would have been 78 years old this week.  I don't know what she would have been like at 78.  She was a tiny little thing but smoked which is probably what kept her so thin and yet what took her life.  She was a nervous person with a high level of anxiety. Would she have been afraid to be old? Would she have suffered in another way with arthritis or cancer?  We'll never know and in some way I'm grateful that she was relieved of any of that suffering.  Having COPD, not being able to breath and dying at 62 was probably enough suffering for anyone.  Maybe that was easier than what she may have had to deal with later.  We'll never know but I'm grateful that she lived long enough to enjoy my two children when they were young.  I'm grateful for the time we were given and that my two children got to have good memories of their grandmother.

2. Two years ago this week my brother passed away suddenly.  It's hard to find something to be grateful for but I am grateful for having him as a brother.  I'm grateful that he made me laugh so hard I cried sometimes.  I'm thankful for being able to talk in depth about some of the hard times growing up.  I hope wherever he is he knows that we all love him and miss him very much.  There's a big hole in our family that he filled and it will never close.  We'll always be a puzzle with a missing piece but we continue to try to fill the piece with our fond memories.

3. A lighter note, I kept hearing a banging sound in my car during the week.  It sounded like something was loose and only happened now and then.  When I slowed down or sped up as if something metal shifted.  I got home the other night and found a silver platter I had left in the car from a party.  That was the metal sound I was hearing!  I'm thankful that there was nothing wrong with the car.

This weekend we're going snow tubing with the whole family.  I'm looking forward to a great time.  Creating laughter and memories and fingers crossed no broken bones or stitches!

Until next week!

Debbie

Gratitude Friday Post 2

A bit late but not forgotten so far.  I tend to fall off the wagon very quickly on blog posts!

This was a quiet week which wasn't so bad.

#1 - Thankful for an uneventful week all the way into the weekend.   My MIL took a little fall this past week but she was completely fine.  Other than that blip there was nothing out of the ordinary.  The hubs was on a hunting trip and was out of town all week so each night I was able to come home and do my own thing, watch what I wanted on TV.  I'm addicted to the Netflix series Schitt's Creek and have been binge watching for the last two weeks.  In summary I am thankful for the quiet week and weekend!

#2 - I got my holiday storage room cleaned up!  I spent most of last weekend putting away Christmas stuff and had to completely re-do my storage room. I have everything neatly put way in it's place. It's a small room and I can actually walk in and move things around now.  In summary I'm thankful for the organization.

#3 - We were supposed to get a huge storm over the weekend but we didn't get much of anything.  While I love the way the snow looks on the trees, a lovely winter scene, I don't like to drive in it.  I suppose I'd be better off in a warmer climate!  In summary I'm thankful for the small snow storm that passed through and not the snowmaggedan they predicted!

Gratitude Friday Post 1

As part of my winning 2020 focus I'm going to chose three things each day for which I am grateful.  On Fridays I'll post my three most favorites.  This is recap of Jan 1 through today Jan 3.

I'm grateful for:

#1 A healthy New Year.  My two 20 somethings went out for New Years Eve with a big group of friends. They all started the party at our house and then moved on to a local bar.  I'm thankful that they were able to walk there and back and not be on the roads.  I'm grateful that we were all together on New Years day, safe and sound.

#2 I'm grateful for the 3 day work week I had this week and that it is already Friday!

#3 I am grateful for the easy commute.   I have an hour long drive each morning and night.  It was a shorter commute and was much less congested.  No snow and now ice to contend with either.  A plus for the Northern Illinois roads in winter.

So that's my Three for Friday.  It wasn't too hard this week since it was only the first three days of the new year.

2020 Word of the Year and steps to stay on track.

My word for 2020 is Winning.

I chose this word not because I'm competing with anyone but instead I want to focus on a winning attitude.  Winning at life, victorious and successful. Winning the competition against myself.  I set the rules, I am my own judge!

I start a lot of projects, I have great intentions and then I let other things get in the way.   Maybe it's a competition against procrastination? I tend to be very good at procrastinating.  2020 is not going to be a good year for procrastination.

Each successful endeavor will be considered a win.

Example: when I complete a project on my list.  It's a WIN!
Did I drink 8 cups of water today?  WIN!

My plan for a winning attitude:

Focus on the positive with gratitude.

  • I'm going to list three things each day I'm grateful for and list my top 3 each Friday.
  • Adopting a No Complaining rule.
  • Praise more
  • Judge less

Focus on Health

  • Eating better - not a diet - just better choices
  • More exercise
  • More sleep - I'm a night owl but have to get up early for work. This will be a challenge.

Focus on financials.

  • Save more - spend less
  • Stay home more than going out
Focus on my home.
  • Finish the unfinished.
  • Don't start a project unless I plan to do it through completion.  Plan the project from start to finish.
Everyone likes to win at something.  It's fun to win.  I am looking forward to a winning 2020!

Goodbye 2019

I didn’t blog much in 2019 but that doesn’t mean I didn’t have anything going on.  I just didn’t give myself enough time to post.  This post is more of a tool to mark time.  There are no pictures to post.  They’re all on my Instagram feed.

I’m sad to admit that I’ve become an Instagram junkie and spend far too much time swiping through other people’s pages and pics.  I spend more time looking at posts of other people fixing up their homes and don’t spend enough time doing it myself.  I garner some great ideas but never seem to put them into action.

I’ve decided to make my last post of 2019 a focus on everything positive.

What am I thankful for from 2019?
  • We’ve had a great time with our friends throughout the year.   We spend almost every Friday with our friends and sometimes it continues on Saturday and Sunday!  If nothing else can be said for 2019 it was most definitely a year filled with laughter.
  • We snowmobiled in the winter, went tubing and spent plenty of time on our boats.  We watched fireworks from the water, we kayaked and fished off of our dock.  It was magical.
  • We still have good health.  As we round our way up the hill into the winter of our 50’s I can be thankful that we have no major health issues.  A kidney stone here, a couple polyps removed but we haven't been slaves to doctor appointments.  Maybe it’s because of all the laughter and good times?
  • Our two children are healthy and employed and have partners who love them.    They have grasped the “adulting” lifestyle.  We have a great relationship, we all hang out together and truly enjoy one another's company.
  • I took an awesome trip to Paris for work but also combined it with a vacation.  I went with my daughter and we had an amazing time.  We fell in love with Paris.   We walked everywhere and ate and drank French wine, had champagne on the grounds of the Eiffel tower, we watched it light up at night and we even attended a cocktail party in the Eiffel tower.   An unexpected vacation for which I will always be thankful.
  • We installed a new pool and pool heater.   My children and their friends spent most of their summer weekends at our house.  We soaked in the pool, told fun stories, sang songs which also brought a lot of laughter and good times!
  • Remodeled our little powder room.  Maybe some of the IG time paid off.   Still some finishing touches to be done but I'm loving it and will post some fun pics in 2020.
  • I lost 20 lbs.   I will be continuing that trend in 2020 because I have a lot more than 20 lbs I need to lose.
  • My word for 2019 was Accomplish.  I would say 2019 was somewhat a success.  I accomplished what I wanted to do.  I had plenty on the list but I’m not considering them a failure if they didn’t get done.  The year passed anyway and even though some things on the list didn’t make it to the finish line time moved on, the laughter still flowed and I’m ready for 2020!

Adieu 2019!

Living Dangerously

The snow has hit us hard the past few months and when it's not snowing it's freezing cold temps.  All I want to do is grab a nice warm blanket, put on some thick socks, put on a fire and curl up on the sofa to binge watch Grace and Frankie!

So when our friends who like to snow mobile asked us to come along for their annual "couples/family" trip my first inclination was NO.  I'm not an outdoors/fast speed thrill seeker.  My biggest thrills can be found at Home Goods! I'm not usually easily persuaded but this time I caved.

Instead of hibernating until the temps break I'm going to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where the temps are just as cold or colder than home and the snow is definitely deeper.  To make it more interesting we'll drive fast through the wind and snow.  I hear the scenery is fantastic but I doubt I'll be able to take pictures since I'll most likely be hanging on for dear life.

Here is what I can expect.  This is a picture from their website.

And this is what we are leaving.

I suppose I'm not changing much of the scenery.  The only difference is this is the view from my back door from a warm house.  The other one will be out in the middle of nowhere in the cold.

I hope I'll enjoy it and I think it will be a great way to say farewell to winter!

Stay warm my friends.

Word for 2019 - Accomplish

Inspirational Word for 2019

Accomplish

VERB - achieve or complete successfully.

I’m a person who loves to start projects.  I come up with some great ideas and jump on it with the excitement of a child on Christmas morning.  I buy the paint and the paint brushes, the fabric and the patterns.  I envision how great the results will be.  Unfortunately I’m a stress worker.  I lose my motivation until it becomes a crisis.  Things like trying to lose weight a month before I leave for vacation or decorating, painting and minor remodels to my house before a family party.  It can be stressful and in the end it doesn’t make me feel like I’ve “accomplished” anything.  It’s almost as if I realize that I can accomplish it so it’s not worth finishing.  I celebrate the win before winning!

This year I’ve decided that the word Accomplish will be my motivational word.  It’s going to do two things for me.  First it will make me think through the project from start to finish.  Second it will make me NOT start something I’m not willing to finish.   An example is if I buy that old dresser with the intent to paint it then I must hold myself to finishing the project or not buy the darn dresser.   I use this example because I have an OLD metal dresser from over a year ago waiting to be painted.  It’s getting painted this year.

Diet and Exercise is a big one!  I started and stopped at least ten times in 2018.  In January of 2018 I planned to lose all of my weight by my next sales meeting which is a week and ½ away.  I even bought a goal dress.  Well that didn’t work.  So now I’ll set some small achievable goals and focus on my word.

Finally this little blog needs more attention.  I think that before and after pics will help move me towards accomplishing a goal.  The best place to document is here and Instagram.

Happy New Year!

Farewell Summer

I've always been a fall person.  I love the colors, the sweaters, the smells and the cooler weather.  Apple picking and pumpkins, decorating for fall was always fun.

Until we moved to the lake.  Suddenly I've changed into a summer person and I dread the winter.  It has to do with the lake, with the summer boating and the pool.  Nothing beats jumping into the pool on a hot, sticky day or heading out to the lake and the big party on the sandbar.

I am getting too old to wish my life away but I really hope winter moves quickly.  I plan to do a lot of projects in the house to make things more interesting.  I've got some rooms to paint and just bought a new sewing machine to make curtains and pillows.

I plan to hit the gym to get my summer body ready.  I was supposed to be ready this year but THAT never happened!   There's always next year.  I'm not giving up!

I'll embrace fall and I'll try to tolerate winter.   Some friends are suggesting snow mobiles but I'm not so sure yet!  Lots of fun ahead.

Dutch Creek Going Keto!

We've had an amazing summer so far at the Dutch Creek Cottage!  A trip to Florida, lot's of boat rides, playing in the pool.  But all that fun leads to a whole bunch of weight gain!  Seven pounds followed me home from Florida!

My daughter started the Keto diet and I was on weight watchers.  I always feel deprived on WW.  I love real cheese and real butter and WW just doesn't support that.  So I decided to give this Keto thing a try. So far I love it!

I started three weeks ago and lost 2.2 the first week and 1.8 the second.  I'm still pretty sure I could have done that with WW too if I stuck to it but I wouldn't be eating foods that I enjoy.   I'm not missing bread or pasta at all, not missing cake or ice cream or any of the heavy sugary foods, I'm not a pop/soda drinker.   The only thing I have to be careful is WINE, BEER and Cocktails!   Can't float in the pool without a cocktail...well I can but I do enjoy a good Gin and Tonic.   Wine night with my best friend is a challenge but we are both trying to lose weight so we keep each other in check.  It's always good to do it with a buddy!

I've got a work trip back to Florida in October and would like to lose a few more pounds by then.  So now it's time for exercise!

This is me after the last exercise video my daughter sent me.  It was a killer!

Not going to give up though!

Sunshine and Warm Days will come

It's been a very long winter.  The longest I can remember even though I know that we have had snow as late as May in Chicagoland.  Heartbreak and sadness seems to linger through these dark, snowy winter days.  Probably because death came knocking in the latter part of winter this year.  Our hearts were broken by the loss of my brother.  A young 52 years old but succumbed to a massive stroke only 10 days before his 53rd birthday in January.   He was a wonderful brother, fun loving and caring Uncle and good friend to many.  Our family will miss him for the rest of our lives.

R.I.P my handsome brother

Perhaps that is why Spring feels as if it's been delayed.  The weather is getting so many people down these days but I will say that the loss of my brother has taught me how precious life is.  We always say "they've gone to a better place" but do they?  I can't think of a better place than here in this world surrounded by family and good friends.  No matter where we go I know that while I'm right here in this world I'll enjoy every snowflake and cold wind that comes my way!
April Snow on the back deck

The sun is shining today and the temps are supposed to rise.  So much to look forward to.   We're replacing our above ground pool, we're cleaning up the yard, soon we'll be bringing the boat out of storage, and no one knows it yet but I'm planning on getting a new puppy.  My son will graduate this May and might move home for a bit.  He took the long road to college but persevered!
Dutch Creek Cottage Blog will see a lot more action.  So much happens and I can't believe I don't put up a quick post now and then!
Today I tried to help save a Pelican!  Fly Pelican, Fly!  Someone posted on a FB page that there was a pelican flying around with fishing twine wrapped around it's beak. I thought I saw it this morning so I called a couple of wildlife centers but they couldn't help unless someone caught it.  #useless #lakelife
Tomorrow is Fish Night.  Every Friday we go out for fish to a little local dive of a bar but the walleye is fantastic.  Laughter fills the air.  Good Food, Good Friends, Good Fish!  Good Martinis!
We are blessed.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all.

We’ll be celebrating at my daughter’s house this year.  Her first year in and she’s cooking for 24 people!  I’ll be there to help of course.   Since we moved a good hour and some change away from most of our family it would be hard for everyone to get to my place in time for dinner.  Our little girl is the half way point.   We’re making two turkeys and a ham along with all the sides.  She got some big appetites coming.

I’m so looking forward to decorating for Christmas in the new house this year.  I’ve been buying a few things here and there but have plenty of bins in the storage room in our basement to go through.  Since we were getting ready to list our house on Saylor last year I scaled down on Christmas.  I’m so excited this year because I’ve got TWO fireplaces to decorate!  I’ve never even had one in any of my past houses.  One of my FP’s has a mantle and the other doesn’t but has a very wide raised hearth so I’m going to have a ball with both.   This long weekend will be filled with decorating and hot chocolate and Christmas music.  Mr. Wonderful will be hanging lights outside and putting up his Hunter Snow Man (which I’m not crazy about so he’ll be tucked in a corner).

I’m really loving the Scandinavian look this year and will be combining it with my traditional tartan Christmas décor.   I love the colors of Christmas!

I love “kilty” Santa ornaments and cannot believe that I went all the way to Scotland last month and didn’t think to buy one for the tree!!   Well, maybe next trip I’ll remember.  I wasn’t in the Christmas mood yet and my daughter didn’t want to traipse through all the gift shops.
I will end this post with some pictures from the old house since we don't have any winter pics from the new house yet.
I always loved this tree and will miss decorating her for Christmas.
In all her finery for Christmas.

Our Christmas tree in the old house.  It was cramped but cozy.
Our new house has plenty of space and I won't have to move around the furniture!

Oh the fun I'll be having this weekend!

Bringing down the wall

It’s hard to believe that we’ve been in this house for almost 5 months!  The summer went by so quickly and so did the fall!  The weather has been so cold that it feels we are already in the dead of winter.  I’m almost afraid to imagine what it will be like in January.  I’m hoping we get a cold snap and then warm up from there.

Since moving to our new home we’ve knocked down a wall which proved to be a little more work than anticipated.  As you can see in the picture it broke up the living room and fireplace room and divided it awkwardly.  The living room portion could have been used as a dining room but that would mean I’d have to walk around the wall from the kitchen.  The fireplace room didn’t seem deep enough for a table and broke up the path from the deck.   Our contractor came in and took a look and determined it was not load bearing.  He agreed that the wall didn’t make sense and said it would not be difficult to remove.  Luckily the previous owners left extra pieces of hardwood flooring in the garage so that issue was resolved.   So all was a go even though we had our entire family up for the long weekend and a ride in the new boat (a post for later).  He started knocking it down and wouldn’t you know it the answer to why that wall was there hit us square in the face.  The electrical for the entire house was running through that wall!   Well, it took a little bit of extra work but all went well and the wall is gone.
Here are a couple of before pics with the wall.  Look how dark the front room is!

Now I have a big open rectangular box of a room.  One side is plain and the other has my fireplace.  It’s still a bit awkward but with the right furniture I think I can bring it all together.  I just picked up a long table from a woman who chalk painted it and sad to say did not do a very good job.  I bought the table for its sturdiness and the shape of the legs.  Even though I’m not experienced with chalk paint I’ll give it a crack.  If that fails then I’ll paint it with some acrylic paint and make it work.  I also bought a bench to match and am on the hunt for some chairs.  Pictures to come on that.   I'm supposed to host Christmas so I better get on it!
The house is in great shape but I need to make it my own.  Almost every room needs a new coat of paint simply because I am not a fan of the colors.  So far the coziest room in the house is turning out to be the basement!  We’ve got a wood burning fireplace down there too and used if for the first time this past weekend.  It’s the first time I’ve ever had a fireplace in my home.
With the holidays approaching it will be hard to start some projects but maybe a quick update of the laundry room or a bathroom will happen.  I’m going to take advantage of the cold weather to stay warm inside and work this winter.
I just have to remember to take pictures!

From Saylor Street to Dutch Creek

We're all moved in.  Two months already but feels like we've been here forever.  I just love living in this little house by the channel.  It's like being on vacation everyday.  Our neighbors are fabulous.  We've been boating at least once a week and twice on the weekends and we don't even own a boat yet!

So much to post, so many updates and lot's of future projects to tackle.
